LISTEN TO THE EPISODE
Summary:
In this insightful conversation, Cynthia and Cory Hartman of New Generations explore how Disciple‑Making Movement terminology has developed, evolved, and continues to shift as God is at work around the world. Listeners will gain a clearer understanding of commonly used movement terms, their historical context, and why language matters for those engaged in disciple‑making today.
Key Points From This Episode:
- We need to re-evaluate, re-assess and re-understand some of the commonly used terms in disciple and church multiplication circles.
- In 1982 the Lausanne Committee on Evangelization was the first to use the term church planting movement.
- It was used in the definition of an unreached people group (UPG) but was not defined.
- The International Mission Board (IMB) and David Garrison further defined the term church planting movement with his booklet and coined the acronym CPM.
- Later, Steve Smith wrote a book about Ying Kai’s work and the term T4T or training for trainers was used for their methodology.
- In 2010, David Watson and City Teams, which later became New Generations used a different approach which they decided to call Disciple Making Movements or DMM. Many agencies adopted this terminology but not necessarily this methodology.
- Some terms have been stretched so far and used so broadly they lose their meaning. With DMM its a last name first name problem.
- Normally when we talk about movements we are describing the cause in the first words before the word movement, as in the “civil rights movement”. The way we use DMM and CPM is different from this which creates some confusion.
- Terms shift naturally with language and use and context, but when we talk to others in the “movement world,” don’t assume your terms mean the same things they mean to the other people from another movement circle or organization.
- The many different terms over just 25 years indicates that God is at work, doing a new and exciting thing in the world! It’s an exciting time to be involved!
