What causes a Disciple-making Movement (DMM) or discipleship effort see disciples multiply and grow? While gathering disciples is important, seeing multiplication requires intentional focus on several key factors. Let’s explore these six essential elements that help a movement grow with strength and see exponential reproduction.
1. Vision Casting
Proverbs 29:18 says, “Where there is no vision, the people perish.” In movements, vision isn’t just for leaders—it must be embedded in every disciple’s heart. The vision to reach lost people must be spoken of often and creatively. It should become part of the everyday language of the movement. When disciples are consistently reminded of the urgency and joy of seeing others come to Christ, they are more likely to act. Vision fuels multiplication.

2. Prayer
Ephesians 6:18 urges believers to “pray in the Spirit on all occasions.” Prayer is the foundation of every movement. Leaders must model a lifestyle of prayer—praying for the lost, for healing, for deliverance, and for spiritual breakthroughs. Prayer isn’t just a support activity; it’s a frontline strategy. Movements that pray fervently and consistently move forward.
3. Obedience
Jesus said in John 15:14, “You are my friends if you do what I command.” Immediate and radical obedience to God’s Word is a hallmark of multiplying movements. Disciples must be trained to act on what they learn—whether it’s sharing the gospel, being baptized, or loving their neighbors. Obedience must be expected, not optional. When obedience becomes the norm, transformation and multiplication follow.
4. Focus
Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 9:24, “Run in such a way as to get the prize.” Disciple multipliers are laser-focused. Distractions abound, but effective leaders prioritize disciple-making above all. Time, energy, and resources should be directed toward training disciples to make disciples. Focusing effort on disciple-making activities, not programs and events, leads to exponential growth and Kingdom fruit.
5. Friendly Accountability
In Luke 19, Jesus illustrates the importance of accountability through the Parable of the Minas. Disciples need encouragement and follow-up. Disciple-making meetings should include sharing application steps from Scripture, then asking how things went, celebrating progress, and overcoming obstacles. Accountability isn’t about control—it’s about encouragement and support. When done in love, it strengthens the group of disciples and keeps everyone moving forward.
6. Generosity
2 Corinthians 8:1–3 highlights the Macedonian church’s joyful giving. Disciples who give freely grow. quickly. Generosity—of our time, talent, and treasure—breaks the grip of poverty and fuels outreach. External funding can often hinder growth, but local giving empowers it. Train disciples to give to God from the start. Their joy in giving will lead to spiritual and numerical growth.

This is so helpful and relevant. It is 100%. In my own experience, we began to see an explosion of disciple-making when we followed #4 (Focus). As a shepherd of a local congregation, it is so easy to spend time and resources on “good things”. Believers love those “good things”. Churches love those good things. But they do not help multiply disciples. Killing those sacred cows is what, I believe, frees the local church to multiply. Praise God!
