Stop Assuming People Are Closed to the Gospel

closed to the gospel

Have you ever looked at someone and thought, “They’d never be interested in Jesus”? Perhaps it was a neighbor, a coworker, or someone from a different religion or culture. It’s easy to make assumptions about people’s spiritual openness—but what if those assumptions are wrong?

In many parts of the world, especially where Christianity isn’t the dominant faith, believers often assume that people are “closed” to the gospel. We do it in the West as well. These assumptions can be based on past experiences, cultural stereotypes, or fear of rejection.

But what if God is already working in their hearts? What if those we’ve written off and already decided are not open, really are?

Are They Open or Closed to the Gospel?

Years ago, I served in Nepal and India.  I sometimes felt that particular Hindus and Buddhists I met wouldn’t be receptive to hearing about Jesus. I was wrong. Time and again, I met people who were spiritually hungry, curious, and open to learning about the Lord. Not everyone was like that.  Some weren’t interested.  But many were!

When we assume people are closed, we often hesitate to share the gospel with them. We avoid conversations, miss opportunities, or approach people with our guard up.

Jesus didn’t teach us to wait for perfectly open people before we share His love. He told us to go and make disciples of all nations. That includes people we might naturally think won’t respond to His truth.

Rapidly multiplying movements grow exponentially, based on the principle of finding “Persons of Peace”—individuals who are open to spirituality and can influence their communities. These people are often not who we expect.  They might not look or act like we assume a Person of Peace would, but sometimes, even before they fully become a “Christian,” they begin to spread the gospel.

Intentionally Change Your Assumptions

Instead of assuming resistance, assume openness. That doesn’t mean everyone will say yes to our message.  But it does mean we will approach people with faith, not fear. We choose to trust that God is already preparing their hearts.

Don’t Forget the Power of Prayer

Prayer is essential in finding open people. Ask God to show you where He’s already working. Pray for boldness and discernment. And when you feel prompted to speak, do it—even if it’s uncomfortable.

Our obedience matters more than the immediate outcome of our sharing. When we step out in faith, God often surprises us. Closed doors open. Hard hearts soften. Entire communities can be transformed.
