“What is the most important quality in a disciple-maker or church planter’s life?” she asked. I paused, reflecting on the many traits that came to mind—diligence, prayer, passion for the lost, and the ability to inspire others. One quality stood out above the rest: perseverance.
Without perseverance, Disciple Making Movements (DMMs) rarely take root. God has given you a vision and passion, or you wouldn’t be reading this. Somewhere along the way, He ignited a dream of multiplication in your heart.
Yet the journey toward seeing that dream fulfilled can be long and discouraging. Other ministry models may seem easier or more effective. Doubts creep in—“Maybe I’m not the right person,” or “This won’t work here.” Perseverance is what carries us through.
Gritty Determination
Launching a movement requires gritty determination. You’ll face setbacks—promising starts that fizzle, key people who move away, team members who lose heart. These are normal experiences. Behind every success story of thousands coming to faith are years of prayer, effort, and disappointment.

Will you be someone who not only starts the journey but stays the course until you see a multiplying movement of radical Jesus followers?
This week, I’ve been reaching out in my own neighborhood. I’ve had several conversations that seemed promising but didn’t lead anywhere. One neighbor was too busy, another didn’t show up, and a third had to work. It felt like I was striking out.
But I’m not discouraged. I know God has prepared someone who is ready to hear the good news. If I persevere, I will find them—and through them, reach many.
6 Situations When A Disciple-maker Shouldn’t Give Up
1. When your testimony isn’t received—keep sharing. The more you sow, the more likely you’ll see growth.
2. When prayers aren’t answered immediately—pray persistently, like the widow in Luke 18.
3. When you feel alone—remember Jesus is with you, and connect with others pursuing disciple multiplication.
4. When discouraging words are spoken—resist lies with God’s truth. The harvest is ripe!
5. When promising disciples fall away—some seeds won’t grow, but others will yield abundantly.
6. When progress is slow—stay faithful. Movements may take years to build, but they grow rapidly once they begin.
Perseverance is essential. Let trials build a steadfast hope in your heart. Our hope isn’t in a strategy—it’s in God’s power to fulfill His purposes. When we align with Him, we cannot fail. We need only to persevere.
