Are Disciple-Making Movements Theologically Sound? A Scholarly Conversation

LISTEN TO THE EPISODE ABOVE

Summary:

Movements may feel like a modern phenomenon, but their roots trace all the way back to the New Testament. In this episode, Cynthia sits down with Dr. Wes Watkins—scholar, academic, and leader in the Motus Dei Network—to explore how God is working through disciple-making movements today. Together, they dive into a thoughtful and honest theological and academic examination of these movements, asking the tough questions and seeking clarity for the future of missions and the church.

Key Points From This Episode:

  • We are not apologists for movements, but want to create a learn tank, for those from various movement streams to come together.
  • Two of the primary critiques of movements are 1) Primitivism and 2) Biblicism
  • Primitivism has to do with an original simplicity fallacy, or the idea that we just need to go back and do things like Jesus did. That idea doesn’t take into account the contextualization of theology that is necessary for accurate interpretation of Scripture.
  • We embrace a robust contextual theology. All theology is interpreted in the context of time and place.
  • All theology must be within the context of communities of faith that bring both interpretation and correction to various interpretatons.
  • A movement is an innovation, not the application of a playbook or formula. They require experimentation, correction, trial and error, as we create together with God in that particular context.
  • In large part, in the West, movements are primarily aspirational, while in other parts of the world they are more grounded in practical understanding and experience.
  • The Sermon on the Mount shows us that Jesus didn’t spend much time on what to believe, but instead talked about who we need to be and what we need to do.
  • Movements are messy and complex.
  • We need one another from East to West as we learn and explore the theological implications of movements in our day.
